Ann Rice's Vampire Chronicles Are Back

On screen, that is.

According to Contact Music, Robert Downey, Jr. is in talks to replace Tom Cruise as the venerable bloodsucking Lestat in a prequel to the 1994 cinematic Interview with the Vampire.

Studio bosses, quite naturally, are anxious to capitalize on the popularity of Twilight, True Blood and the general vampire craze. And rightfully so, if honestly the almighty dollar is the bottom line.

This new film, should it come to pass, would focus more on Lestat's character and how he came to be a vampire.

Personally, I think Robert Downey, Jr. could act the hell out of this role. Or nearly any role. The man is so talented it's frightening. And if you've read any of my previous posts dealing with Tom Cruise, you know how I feel about him. Unless the producers are going to turn Lestat into a running, jumping, maniacally grinning action hero, Cruise ain't your man.

I have not read any of Ann Rice's books. I know. Shocking. Especially since I have a weird fascination with the supernatural and, yes, weird stuff. I tried reading Interview with the Vampire over 20 years ago and gave up after about 100-150 pages in. I just didn't feel connected with the book or characters at that time and was anxious to move on to something else.

Hmmmm, maybe I'll try to pick the book up again. Twenty years' time should make a difference!

What do you think? Will Robert Downey, Jr. make a good Lestat? Would you pay to see a new Vampire Chronicles film?
